Description

The Former Royal Naval Hospital Pavilion, located north of the inner gates and originally serving as the pay office, was built in 1765 and designed by Alexander Rovehead for the Navy Board. Constructed from Plymouth limestone rubble with limestone dressings, it features rusticated quoins and a dry slate pyramidal mansard roof, which is topped with a coped parapet adorned with ball finials and a tall stuccoed chimney with a moulded entablature. The building has a small square plan and is a single storey plus attic, showcasing a symmetrical three-bay front that faces the Admiral's Office, which is similar in design. The front includes an arcade of three round arches with imposts, containing 19th-century vertical-glazed fanlights above a central two-light window, as well as glazed and panelled doors with sidelights in the other arches. The east side features flat-headed openings, while the west side has a lead hopper dated 1765, inscribed with "GR." The interior has not been inspected. Historically, this pavilion is identical in design to the one to the south, flanking the inner gates. It served as the agent's office and porter's lodge in 1784 and included receiving and fumigating rooms in 1800 before becoming the pay office. It is part of an exceptional and complete military hospital complex.
