Description

This is a house, built around 1806 as the chaplain's residence within the former Royal Naval Hospital complex in Stonehouse, Plymouth. It was designed by Daniel Alexander. The house is constructed of Plymouth limestone ashlar with flat arches and features a mid-floor string above the ground floor and a 1st-floor sill string; it has a dry slate roof with projecting front eaves, and an ashlar end stack on the right side. It follows a double-depth plan, with a front room on the right and an entrance hall leading to a 2-storey porch on the left. The building is three storeys high, with a basement, and has a symmetrical 3-window front. It contains late 19th-century 4-pane horned sash windows. A doorway with a 20th-century door leads up a flight of stone steps on the left side. The interior includes panelled window shutters and a dog-leg staircase with a closed string and mahogany handrail; the rest of the interior was not inspected. Subsidiary features include a high rubble wall with dressed coping stones to the left and right of the house. This building forms part of an exceptionally complete military hospital complex.
