Description

The Former Royal Naval Hospital, known as The Square No. 14 (Middleton Lodge), is located in Stonehouse, Plymouth. Built in 1765, it was designed by Alexander Rovehead for the Navy Board. The building is constructed from Plymouth limestone rubble with limestone dressings and features rusticated quoins. It has a dry slate pyramidal mansard roof with a coped parapet and a band with ball finials, topped by a tall stuccoed stack with a moulded entablature. The front has two mansard windows and is a single storey plus attic with a symmetrical three-bay arcade that faces the matching Pay Office. The arcade includes three round arches on an impost string, with 19th-century vertical-glazed fanlights above a central two-light window and glazed panelled doors with sidelights at the other arches. The other elevations have original or early 19th-century hornless sashes with glazing bars.

Inside, the building retains many original features, including a dog-leg staircase with a two-panel door underneath, a panelled door within a doorway flanked by reeded pilasters, partitioned filing shelves, sliding panelled doors at the top, and reeded window shutters. A high rubble wall is attached to the south side of the building. This structure is part of the original hospital plan and is identical in form to the pavilion north of the inner gates (the Pay Office). Stonehouse is significant for its pioneering hospital design and is part of an outstanding and complete military hospital complex.
