Description

Melness is a house dating from the mid to late 18th century, with some alterations and additions from the 19th century and a few later changes. It is constructed from granite and elvan rubble, with the first floor rendered above a band course. The roof is covered with asbestos slate and features ridge tiles, with a gable end on the left and a hipped end on the right. The house has a double depth plan and faces north, with the main rooms located on the front left and right sides. There is a back entrance from the road on the right side leading to the rear.

The exterior is two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-window front, adorned with a modillion cornice that continues around the right side. The first floor features three 18th-century 12-pane sash windows in exposed boxes. The ground floor has a central 18th-century doorcase with a pediment on consoles above a panelled door, flanked by pilasters and a fanlight with radial glazing bars. There is an internal porch with a panelled and margin-glazed door from the 19th century. To the right of the entrance, there are 12-pane sashes with voussoirs, and a 4-panelled door with an overlight, pilasters, and a cornice.

The left side of the house is slate-hung and painted, with two hipped end roofs over the two-storey 19th-century addition. The first floor on the left has a 16-pane sash in an exposed box from the 19th century, while the right side has a 4-pane light at ground level. There is also a porch with a pitched roof on the left. The interior has not been inspected.
