Description
36 and 38 Fore Street is a bank building constructed in 1891 by architect Silvanus Trevail for the Cornish Bank Limited, with few later alterations. It is built from granite ashlar and features a hipped slate roof behind a parapet, along with an axial stack that has a brick shaft.
The building has a symmetrical six-bay front and stands two storeys tall. The ground floor showcases fine original panelled doors with overlights on either side, each supported by Doric columns and topped with a pediment. The central four bays sit on a plinth with rock-faced rusticated pilasters between the windows, and there is an entablature above. All windows on this level have been replaced with 20th-century plate glass. The first floor features six plate-glass sash windows set in raised moulded architraves, with pilasters between the windows that exhibit pronounced entasis, along with a cornice and blocking course.
Inside, the bank on the left has an entrance hall that leads to a stair hall at the rear left. There is an open-well stair with turned balusters and newels topped with ball finials.
