Description

Thorn Cottage is a house dating from the late 18th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. It is constructed of painted slatestone rubble, with the upper level at the front featuring painted slate-hanging. The roof is made of asbestos slate and has ridge tiles and gable ends, with gable end stacks that have rubble shafts and shaped tops. An addition to the right has a slurried scantle slate roof.

The layout consists of a two-room plan, with the entrance leading directly into the room on the right, and a larger room to the left, both heated by gable end stacks. There is a two-storey addition at the right end that is unheated, likely used as a dairy with a loft above. A single-storey outshut runs along the entire rear of the house.

The exterior features two storeys and a symmetrical three-window front. The first floor has two early 20th-century two-light casements and a central blind window. The ground floor has a central half-glazed 20th-century door, with similar two-light casements on either side. The lower two-storey addition to the right has a gable end and a six-pane light on the first floor. The left end is blind, while the rear outshut has a 20th-century door on the left side. The right end is also blind and has a 20th-century porch. At the rear, the single-storey outshut is constructed of rubble and features three 20th-century windows. The interior has not been inspected.
