Description
The engine house and chimney at Gunnislake Clitters Mine date from the late 19th century. The engine house is constructed from slatestone rubble with granite quoins and brick dressings, while the chimney is made of slatestone rubble topped with brick. The engine house is located at the north end of the mine site, beside the River Tamar, with the chimney situated about 15 metres to the south. The engine house has a rectangular plan, featuring a bob wall at the south gable end and a tall, narrow round-arched bob-opening with an upper round arch. There is a small rectangular building attached to the west side. The chimney is circular and tapered, with a brick top and cornice.
Gunnislake Clitters was known for mining copper, tin, umber, wolfram, and arsenic. The site began as an adit trail from the Tamar between 1822 and 1827 and was re-opened in the 1860s. By 1865, it had a new 40-inch cylinder engine with a 10-foot stroke built in the Bedford Foundry, Tavistock, and a 30 horsepower whim engine was used to draw ores from the 90 fathom level. After 1900, the mine was amalgamated with Hingston Down Consols and the adjoining Hawkmoor and Gunnislake Old Mine, remaining one of the few that continued production into the early 20th century. The site also includes other buildings such as a treatment mill, some flues, and the remains of another engine house.
