Description

CALSTOCK SX 47 SW 2/20 Chilsworthy brick kilns and chimney II Brick kilns and chimney. Probably began working after 1906, served by railway by 1914. Slatestone rubble with granite and brick dressings. Plan: Hoffman kilns. 2 sets of rectangular kilns, with the chimney about 10 metres to west. To the east are the machine house and drying sheds with offices, much altered ; the railway ran along the north of the site. The claypits are to the south, formerly with a tramway over the road. The kilns are rectangular on plan, with battered walls in slatestone and granite rubble, with brick quoins. Each side has 6 round arches, narrow, with brick heads ; the front of each kiln has larger round arches with brick heads. The kilns are vaulted inside with ventilation holes along the top of the roof. The chimney is in slatestone rubble with granite plinth with granite quoins; circular and tapered, with brick top and cornice. There is a round-arched inspection hole at the base and an arch inside formerly leading to an underground flue. This is the most complete brickworks in the area. The kilns operated the Hoffman continuous process. Sources: Tamar Valley Project. Crombleholme, R.: Callington Railways 1985.
