Description

Bonython is a house, originally dating from the early 18th century, and subsequently altered in the mid-to-late 19th century and with 20th-century additions. Constructed of slatestone rubble with granite dressings, it is now divided into multiple occupancies. The building has a hipped slate roof with ridge tiles and a modillion cornice. A brick chimney stack is situated at the right end, with a truncated stack at the left, and a further stack in the rear service wing. Parts of the roof are covered in asbestos slate.

The house follows a single-depth plan, with a central entrance leading to a stair hall. The principal rooms are located to the front right and left, with a rear service wing to the left and a single-room addition to the rear right, extended upwards in the 20th century. A late 19th-century canted bay has been added to the rear left.

The symmetrical front elevation has five windows on each floor. The windows are late 19th-century four-pane sashes within original openings, featuring granite voussoirs and keystones. A central 18th-century six-panelled door is topped with an overlight and keystone, sheltered by a segmental lead hood supported on scrolled stone brackets. A bay to the right has a 20th-century door and a first-floor four-pane sash, both with granite dressings. This bay has a roof with gable ends and asbestos slate. The left end features a first-floor four-pane sash. The rear wing is two-storeyed with a 20th-century casement and blocked door at ground floor. Further rear additions include a porch and a two-storey addition with four-pane sashes.

The interior includes an early 18th-century open-well staircase with turned balusters, a moulded cornice in one room, and a bolection-moulded chimneypiece in the kitchen wing. The stair hall has been partitioned. The original 18th-century layout has been modified by partitions and doors, including a blocked doorway and a two-panelled door to the kitchen wing.
