Description
A pair of attached houses with shops at ground floor, dating from around 1830-40. The houses were altered in the 20th century, including the insertion of shops. They are built of stone rubble, with the ground floor rendered and the upper part slate-hung and painted. The roof is slate, with ridge tiles and gable ends. There are gable end stacks; the stack on the left has a rendered shaft, and the right gable end stack is shared with the adjacent property to the right. The original plan likely featured paired central entrances, with principal rooms on the outer sides, heated by the gable end stacks. The front rooms were later remodelled as shops in the 20th century. The left house is called 'Friends' and the right house is called 'Jaynes'. The front is asymmetrical with four windows. The first floor has four 12-pane sash windows in exposed boxes from the early 19th century. The ground floor has a continuous plain fascia over the shop fronts. 'Friends' has three plate-glass windows and a door with one fielded panel and a overlight. 'Jaynes' features a 20th-century door with pilasters and a blocked overlight, alongside two large plate-glass windows. The interior was not inspected, but may contain features from the early 19th century on the first floor.
