Description

Nos. 47-57 on West Street in Penryn is a terrace of two pairs of small town houses, along with a similar house that has a coach house and another small house on the right. This building dates from the early to mid-19th century and is constructed from granite and killas rubble with granite dressings. The carriage doorway is covered with stucco on studwork, and the roofs are dry slate, except for No. 49, which has been replaced with asbestos slate. The houses feature brick end stacks and cast-iron ogee gutters, some adorned with lions' heads, except for No. 57.

The terrace has a double-depth plan, with each house having one room at the front. It is two storeys high and has an overall seven-window range. Original 12-pane hornless sash windows can be found at No. 47 and the ground floor of No. 49, while the other windows are later copies. Each house has a one-window range, with an extra window above the carriage doorway at No. 51. The pairs of houses have central doorways, with No. 51 featuring a central house doorway. Nos. 47 and 49 have overlights and original three-panel doors, while No. 55 has a door with two round-arched panels; the other doors are 20th-century replacements, also with overlights. The interior has not been inspected. This terrace is noted as part of a good row of 19th-century buildings.
