Description
Nos. 12-15 River Street is a terrace of two pairs of townhouses, now serving as shops with accommodation above. Built in the mid-19th century, the buildings are finished in stucco with channelled rustication on the first floor. Nos. 12 and 13 have a scantle slate roof, while the other buildings have an asbestos slate roof. A cast-iron ogee gutter is present on No. 15. The terrace has a double-depth plan and stands three storeys tall, featuring an eight-window range. The windows are mid-19th century four-pane sashes, with chamfered rustications on the ground and first floors. Canted bay windows are linked by moulded cornices on the first floor. The second-floor windows have plain architraves and sills supported by consoles. The second-floor corners are rusticated, and there is an entablature with console brackets beneath the eaves. Nos. 12 and 13 (on the left) include one 20th-century shop front, while No. 14 has a slightly older 20th-century shop front. No. 15 features a late 19th-century double shop front with flanking pilasters. The interiors have been altered in the 20th century and were not inspected.
