Description
A terrace of three town houses, numbers 16, 17, and 18 River Street, was built around 1838. The houses are constructed from roughly coursed Killas stone with granite dressings. The roof over number 17 is covered with scantle slate, while the roofs of the other two houses have been replaced with asbestos slate. Number 17 features a cast-iron ogee gutter. The houses have a double-depth plan and are three stories high, comprising a six-window range, with two windows visible on each front. The windows are originally 16-pane hornless sashes, with flat stone arches above; some of the glazing bars have been removed from windows on the first floor to the right of number 17 and all of number 18. Round-arched doorways are located to the left of numbers 16 and 17. Number 16 has a late 19th-century shop front with original terminal pilasters and a moulded cornice over the fascia, although slender columns and other details were lost when the shop windows were replaced in June 1989. The late 19th-century shop front of number 18 is largely obscured. The shops have been altered in the 20th century; the interiors of the upper levels were not inspected during the listing process.
