Description
Nos. 40 and 42 are an unequal pair of town houses built in the mid-19th century. The front of No. 42 is finished in stucco on a rubble base, while No. 40 is mostly rendered. Both houses have dry slate roofs with projecting front eaves; No. 42 features a hipped front end and a rendered brick stack on the right. The buildings have a double-depth plan, with No. 40 having two storeys and No. 42 having three storeys, resulting in an overall three-window range.
No. 42 retains its original 12-pane hornless sash windows, while No. 40 has later horned copies. The central entrance features a pair of round arched pilastered doorways with consoles and a moulded hood, along with original six-panel doors and plain fanlights. There is an early 20th-century open front porch with a glass roof, shaped fascia, chamfered posts, and shaped arched sides with a latticed dado.
On the right side, there is a ramped stucco brick wall that connects to a hogs-back granite ashlar forecourt plinth, which is topped with 20th-century scrolled iron railings. The interior has not been inspected.
