Description

No. 8 Woodland Road is a house, now used as a college, built around 1860. It features coursed Pennant rubble with limestone dressings, ashlar lateral and ridge stacks, and a slate hipped roof. The building has a double-depth plan and is designed in the Italianate style with striking Ruskinian details. It stands two storeys tall with a basement and has a symmetrical front with quoins, a first-floor string course, and carved brackets at the eaves.

The entrance is marked by a doorcase with three-quarter granite columns featuring foliate capitals, leading to a semicircular-arched opening and a recessed door with a diamond panel. The ground-floor windows are stilted and keyed segmental arches, while the first-floor windows are semicircular arches, both adorned with foliate capitals and plate-glass sashes. The left side has a three-light bow window, and the right side features paired windows with a central attached column, along with balustrades of pierced circles at the ground-floor windows and doorway. The first floor has paired outer windows and a single window above the door.

Inside, there is a tiled lobby and hall separated by a glazed screen, leading to a central stone dogleg winder stair with cast-iron balusters and a large newel post. A side service stair features stick balusters, column newels, and a ramped rail. The interior also includes six-panel doors and a modillion cornice.
