Description
No. 137 Holgate Road is a mid-19th century house that now serves as a private college. It is built of white brick with ashlar dressings and features a hipped slate roof. The building has two storeys above a cellar and is arranged in three bays. The facade includes two sill bands.
The left-hand bay and the right-hand first-floor window contain tripartite sashes without glazing bars, set under elliptical brick arches with keystones. The central window on the first floor is also a sash without glazing bars and has a semicircular head, flanked by engaged shafts. The ground floor features a canted bay window on a brick base, with sashes that have rounded upper corners, columns at the angles, and a bracketed cornice.
An ashlar porch supported by two Tuscan columns has a bracketed cornice and brick pilaster responds. The divided door includes partly-glazed round-headed panels, with an overlight divided into two panes. The sprocketed overhanging eaves are decorated with bobbin-like projections at intervals, and there are chimneys on both sides of the building. To the left, there is a lower two-storey blank wall belonging to an attached wing, which has pilaster strips and a parapet wall with coping that sweeps downwards in the centre. The interior has not been inspected.
