Description

A pair of houses at 120 and 122 Holgate Road, York, dating from the 18th century and later used as guesthouses. The houses are constructed of brick with a hipped slate roof. The main block is symmetrical, three storeys high and four bays wide. It features two recessed side wings, one to the left and one to the right, containing the entrances and rising two storeys. The ground floor of the main block has two canted bay windows with square glazing panes. A first-floor balcony is present, with anthemion railings remaining at No. 122. Upper-storey windows have painted, rusticated lintels and large square-paned sash windows with shallow upper sashes. The right-hand wing, belonging to No. 120, has three round-headed windows on the first floor, a sill band, an attic dormer, a ground-floor window on the right, and a painted stuccoed entrance to the left. This entrance has a three-panel door with an overlight and flanking lights with pilasters, all leading to a porch with a cornice. The left-hand entrance wing is similar, except that it has two round-headed first-floor windows and a parapet with cast-iron cresting. Chimneys are located to the left and right of the main block. The interior was not inspected.
