Description

Three houses, numbers 35, 36, and 37, with attached walls and railings, were built around 1870 and altered in the 20th century. They are constructed of yellow brick with painted stone or artificial stone dressings, and have slate mansard roofs. Number 37 is symmetrical with three bays, while numbers 35 and 36 are arranged as a mirrored pair, each with one bay and windows adjoining, with doorways facing outwards. The windows are sash windows without glazing bars. The ground floor features brick canted bay windows with painted sills and lintels and cast-iron cresting. First-floor windows have segmental brick arches, with paired windows in each bay except for the second bay of number 37, which has a single window. Dormers light the attic, with two to number 37 and one each to numbers 35 and 36; these are of brick with painted lintels, gable copings, and finials, although number 35 has a rebuilt flat coping. The doors feature four raised fielded and bolection-moulded panels with overlights, set within surrounds of brick pilasters with painted caps bearing foliated decoration and carved heads, and cornices with cast-iron cresting supported by paired brackets. The eaves have brick corbelling. Chimneys are located to the left and between the houses. The interiors were not inspected. Brick walls enclosing the front gardens of numbers 36 and 37, and the front garden wall of number 35, have chamfered stone copings. Railings of cast iron, imitating wrought iron, run along the walls of numbers 35 and 36; the standards are linked by an upper horizontal rail, with semi-circles springing from a lower rail that has cast rosettes at the intersection with shorter intermediate uprights. Number 37 lacks railings to its left-hand return wall. The front wall incorporates re-used cast-iron panels decorated with ellipses, rectangles, and diagonals. The gate piers are of square plan, chamfered to octagons, and topped with ball finials. The gate replicates the railing pattern and is a 20th-century addition of mild steel.
