Description

Holgate Terrace comprises eight houses forming part of a larger terrace, built between 1846 and 1851. The buildings are constructed of brick with painted stone dressings and have slate roofs. The exterior presents three storeys, with each house having two bays. A first floor sill band and a modillion gutter cornice are present. Each house features a single-storey canted bay window to the left and a doorway to the right. Most windows are sash windows, divided into horizontal rectangular panes; however, No. 100 has first floor windows with margin panes to the upper sashes and 20th-century replacement windows on the second floor. The doorways have panelled pilasters, modillion cornices, panelled reveals, and overlights with a central vertical division. No. 100 has a door with two tall round-headed panels, a design mirrored at Nos. 108 and 106. No. 104 incorporates casements in the upper parts of the first-floor windows and on the second floor, along with a 20th-century glazed front door. No. 102 features top-hung casements on the first floor, casements on the second floor, and a front door with two round-headed panels. Nos. 98 and 96 are similar in design, with No. 98 having a 20th-century glazed front door. No. 96 has a 20th-century shopfront on the ground floor, sash windows with tall lower leaves on the first floor, a casement to the left on the second floor, and a blind recess on the right. Chimneys are located to the left of each house. The right-hand return gable wall of No. 96 has three bays with unequal sashes on the ground and first floors and casements on the second floor, with a 20th-century shopfront filling the left-hand ground-floor bay. The central doorway has an engaged Tuscan column doorcase with a modillion cornice and panelled reveals, topped by an overlight. The interior of the buildings has not been inspected.
