Description
This is a house located at 139 Holgate Road in York, built in the mid to late 19th century. It features a white brick exterior with a hipped slate roof. The facade is symmetrical, consisting of two storeys plus an attic and three bays. The projecting brickwork on the left and right creates quoin strips with channelled rustication.
On the ground floor, there are canted bay windows with brick bases and slate roofs. These windows have sashes without glazing bars, rounded upper corners, and moulded surrounds with engaged shafts at the angles topped with foliated caps. The first-floor windows are also sashed, featuring segmental heads and raised plain surrounds with hoods that extend into a moulded string course. A central gabled attic dormer provides light to the attic space.
The doorway is notable for its painted surround with engaged columns that have shaft rings and foliated caps. It features a basket arch with edge roll moulding and a frieze decorated with stepped battlemented details. The door itself has six panels with raised fields and a plain overlight above. Inside, there is a glazed inner door with an architrave and console brackets. The eaves overhang and include a timber valance. There are chimneys on both the left and right sides of the house.
To the right of the main structure, there is a single-storey wing with a window situated between two glazed doors. On the left, there is a lean-to wing that has been altered in the 20th century. The interior has not been inspected.
