167 AND 167A, HOLGATE ROAD

167 and 167A Holgate Road is a house that has been converted into a doctors' surgery. It was built in the mid to late 18th century and underwent some alterations in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of brick in Flemish bond, with some painted stone decorations, and has a concrete tile roof.

The structure is two storeys high with an attic and features five bays. On the first floor, there are sash windows with glazing bars and rubbed brick flat arches. The ground floor has brick projections on either side of the central doorway, which is sheltered by a lean-to roof. Each side of the doorway has a canted brick bay window with painted stone lintels and sills, topped with hipped roofs.

An attic dormer is located near the centre of the roof, featuring a shallow-pitched roof and a horizontal glazing bar sash window. The doorway, now set back due to 19th-century additions, is framed by a doorcase with fluted Doric pilasters, a frieze adorned with swags and festoons, and a moulded dentilled pediment. The door itself has six panels and a plain rectangular overlight. There is a modillion gutter cornice, and a lead rainwater hopper is positioned to the right of the second bay. The gables are coped, and there are two axial ridge chimneys.

On the left-hand return gable wall, which consists of two bays, there is a late 19th-century timber canted oriel window at the first floor level on the right. This oriel is supported by elaborate brackets, features sash windows with moulded mullions, and has a dentilled modillion cornice with a hipped slate roof. The interior has not been inspected.
