Description

The Tyrrells is a house that has been converted into a surgery and flat. It dates from the late 17th century and was extended at the rear in the mid-18th century. The building underwent alterations around 1800, had a wing added around 1840, and was further altered around 1888. It is constructed of hand-made orange brick in Flemish bond, with rendered sides and some slate hanging at the rear, topped by a red tiled roof.

The house has a rectangular double-depth plan formed by the 18th-century addition at the back of a single-depth range, under a two-span roof, with a service wing added to the right. It stands two-and-a-half storeys tall and has three bays, which were originally symmetrical, featuring a parapeted centre that projects forward. The corners are highlighted with rendered "quoining."

A late 19th-century porch with a hipped roof leads to a glazed door with an overlight. To the left is a wide sashed window with margin panes, and to the right is a late 19th-century canted bay window. The first floor has three 12-pane unhorned sash windows, all with gauged brick heads. The roof includes three small gabled dormers, each with 2-light casements.

At the rear, there is a ground floor loggia supported by chamfered timber posts, leading to a slate-hung upper floor that features three 9-pane sashed windows and a casement window to the left. There is a weatherboarded hip-roofed dormer to the left and a smaller gabled dormer to the right, both with 2-light casements. Inside, the building has been altered, but the former parlour in the first bay of the front range retains a cross-corner fireplace.
