Description
Old Forge Cottage is a house that has been converted into two shops and an office. It dates back to the 17th century and has undergone significant alterations. The exterior is white-painted roughcast, with some exposed timber framing on the left gable wall and a red tile roof. The building has a rectangular single-depth two-unit plan, with two low storeys and two bays. The ground floor has been replaced by shops, while the first floor features two low two-light casement windows under the eaves. There is a chimney on the front slope of the right-hand gable.
On the left gable wall, there is an inserted shop window at ground level and a large four-light casement window that disrupts the lower tier of large framing, which consists of three rails and some studs of light scantling. The rear of the building has three small two-light windows on the first floor, including one horizontal sliding sash, but is mostly obscured by modern additions.
Inside, the second bay contains a large chamfered spine beam and a small inglenook fireplace with a reused oak bressummer. The original rear wall features a two-light window with diamond-section iron bars. The building is included for its group value.
