Description

Fairfield House is a house that has been converted into an office. It was originally built in the early 18th century, with some later additions and alterations. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and features a red tile roof. It has a double-depth plan and stands two-and-a-half storeys high with three symmetrical bays.

The exterior includes a chamfered plinth, a three-course band, and an eaves cornice adorned with brick dentils. The central doorway is framed by a moulded architrave and topped with a pediment supported by fluted consoles, leading to a recessed glazed and panelled door. To the right on the ground floor, there is a wide segmental-headed tripartite sash window, while the other windows are segmental-headed 12-pane sashes with narrow margin panes. The tall mansard roof sweeps over the eaves and features two gabled dormers with 6-pane sashes. There are chimney stacks on both side walls at the ends of the building.

A modern one-and-a-half-storey addition at the left end is not considered of special interest. The rear of the house has a wooden two-storey addition that includes a door at ground floor and a Venetian window above, but otherwise resembles the front. Inside, there is a doglegged staircase with an open string, stick balusters, and a ramped handrail, along with three 19th-century cast-iron grates decorated with anthemions. The interior has been otherwise altered.
