Description
This is a probable mid-16th-century farmhouse that was later divided into two cottages and is now an office. It was altered in the 17th century, most notably with the addition of a brick gable wall incorporating a chimney. The structure is timber-framed with colour-washed brick nogging, some of the brickwork laid in a herringbone pattern, and has a red tile roof.
The building has a rectangular, single-depth, three-bay plan, likely originally of the smoke-bay type. Short rear wings have been added to each end. The facade has a plinth and shows four wall posts with braces to the wall-plate, a mid-rail, and some light studs. The ground floor has board doors in the second and third bays. The first bay has altered three- and two-light casement windows; the second bay has two single-light casements; and the third bay has a small six-pane sash window. The first floor has a three-light casement window under the eaves in each bay, those in the first two bays having pegged frames, external lugged hinges to the central opening, and diamond lattice glazing, while the third bay has altered glazing to the outer lights. Chimneys are present at both gables, with the left-hand chimney having coupled flues and a prominent moulded cornice. The rear elevation exhibits exposed timber framing similar to the front.
Inside, there are jowelled wall posts, large spine beams in the first and third bays, and a less substantial spine beam in the central bay (likely added later). A large brick inglenook fireplace is located at the south end, with a bread oven on the right-hand side, situated beneath the staircase in that corner. Mortices indicate former wooden diamond mullions in the window head and sill on the first floor of the third bay. A floored attic extends over the first and second bays. The roof contains re-used rafters with smoke-blackening, as well as two sets of carpenter's marks.
