Description

The Fox Inn is a public house built in 1878 and restored in 1985. It is constructed of brick in Flemish bond with a plain tile roof. The building has two storeys and three bays. The outer bays and window areas feature bricks that project slightly to create a quoined effect. The window surrounds have roll-moulded edges and segmental heads. The upper sashes consist of small panes arranged in a grid of six wide by five deep. The lower sashes on the first floor have a single vertical division, while those on the ground floor have embossed glass. To the left of the left-hand window on the ground floor, there is an area of rebuilt brickwork and a divided six-panel door with an overlight. This doorway, which was formerly the entrance to the 'Jug and Bottle', is now blocked internally and serves no function. Above the central bay, there is a gable with a stone coping and finial, featuring volutes on either side. A central panel inscribed with 'THE FOX INN REBUILT 1878' is framed by an architrave with a carved brick border, and a small round window is situated above it. The brick porch has an outer doorway with a semicircular brick arch, a plain overlight, and an impost band. The gable is designed as an open pediment, complete with a finial and a carved figure of a fox within the pediment. The eaves project at the verges, and the gable chimneys have moulded cornices. Inside, the original compartmented interior and servery arrangement remain intact, featuring original fittings such as the bar, benches, fireplaces, and a wooden staircase.
