Description

7 and 9 Woodland Road are a pair of attached houses, now used as a college, built in 1862 by George Gay. They are constructed from limestone ashlar and feature lateral and party wall stacks, with the roof not visible. The houses are designed in a Neoclassical style and consist of two storeys, a basement, and an attic, arranged in a double-depth plan with a two-window range.

The symmetrical front has projecting ends and a banded ground floor with panelled ends, along with balustrades below and above the outer three-light bow windows. The first floor features paired pilasters leading to a dentil cornice, and the attic storey has a moulded parapet with gabled ends. The entrances are located in the return elevations; No. 9 has a semicircular-arched doorway with a 20th-century door and balustrade, while No. 7 has rusticated jambs leading to semicircular-arched doorways with two-leaf, two-panelled doors. Both houses have first-floor bracketed cornices and plate-glass sash windows with shouldered architraves, as well as 3/3-pane sash windows in the basement. A cast-iron verandah connects the wings and features two elliptical arches. The design is closely similar to Nos. 21-25 Tyndall's Park Road and other houses by Gay in Cotham Road.
