Description

8 and 10 Cotham Road are a pair of attached houses, now divided into three, built in the mid-19th century, likely by George Gay. The houses are constructed from limestone ashlar with rendered sides, and the roof is not visible. They feature a double-depth plan and are designed in a Neoclassical style.

The building has two storeys, a basement, and an attic, with a four-window range. The symmetrical front has projecting wings and a banded ground floor that leads to a plat band. The first floor features paired pilasters supporting an entablature with a bracketed cornice, and there is a low attic storey with paired pilasters topped with small pediments.

In the central section, there is a plain, deep 20th-century doorway inserted to the right of the left-hand window. The returns have projecting centers with paired pilasters, entablatures, rectangular overlights, and two-leaf, three-panel doors, along with a raised parapet above the doorway that conceals an external chimney. The three-light outer bays have parapets and 4/4-pane sashes with margin panes. The first-floor windows have architraves and cornices above, while the inner windows feature eared architraves and sill bands, with sashes that include margin bars. The interior has not been inspected. This building is part of a type of house constructed by Gay along Cotham Road and in Tyndall's Park.
