Description
A pair of attached houses at 5 and 6 Hillside, built in the mid-19th century, likely designed by George Gay. The houses are constructed of limestone ashlar and render with a party wall and a lateral stack. They have a double-depth plan and are built in an Italianate style.
Each house is two storeys high with an attic and basement, and has a two-window facade. Slightly projecting wings feature a banded ground floor with a frieze and dentil cornice. The first floor has paired pilasters topped by a frieze and bracketed cornice, while the attic has paired pilasters leading to pedimented tops. Entrance returns have columns supporting a first-floor entablature with panelled doors and a distyle-in-antis recessed doorway. The right-hand return has a bowed entrance with a four-window range, the first-floor windows having moulded architraves above attached balustrades with panelled ends and bracketed cornices. Two panelled stacks have scrolled brackets and a round-arched arcade between them. The windows are predominantly 6/6-pane sashes on the ground floor and 3/3-pane sashes in the attic. The front facade has a bowed left-hand bay with tripartite round-arched windows, and a replaced right-hand bay with mid-20th century glazing. Attic windows have moulded jambs and plate-glass sashes. A decorative iron verandah is situated between the outer sections, spanning ground-floor French windows. The interior has not been inspected. The houses are one of a group of three matching designs.
