Description
No. 1 Cotham Road is an attached house built between 1905 and 1906 by architect Henry Dare Bryan. It features a combination of limestone ashlar and timber-framing, with ashlar cross-axial stacks and a tile cross-gabled roof. The house has a double-depth plan and is designed in the Arts and Crafts style, standing two storeys tall with a four-window range.
A cross gable extends out to the right of the center, and to its left is an elliptical-arched doorway that has stop mouldings, a cornice, and a deeply-set door. The windows are timber 2- and 3-light mullion and transom types with leaded casements. Notably, the window to the right of the gable on the ground floor is set beneath a shallow recessed relieving arch. The timber-framed cross-gable features a wide canted bay beneath a partly jettied gable, which is adorned with carved barge-boards and a pendent. The interior has not been inspected. This house is part of the Western Congregational College, now known as Western House.
