Description

This is a pair of attached houses at 21 and 23 Tyndalls Park Road, Clifton, Bristol, built around 1860 by George Gay. They are now used as flats. The houses are constructed of limestone ashlar with lateral and party wall stacks, and have a roof that is not visible. They follow a double-depth plan, with two main floors, a basement, and an attic. The symmetrical front has projecting ends, with a banded ground floor up to an entablature, and balustrades below the windows and to the verandah. There’s a dentil cornice and a moulded parapet to the attic. The entrances are located in the ends of the buildings. The windows have elliptical arched heads, bracketed cornices, and plate-glass sashes. The wings feature three-light bow windows, while the main part of the front has three-light windows above and single windows in between, with smaller windows in the attic, all with shouldered architraves. A cast-iron verandah extends across the front, featuring two elliptical arches and a balustrade to the first floor. The entrance on the left side has rusticated jambs to a semicircular arch, a three-pane fanlight, and a pair of two-panel doors. Inside, the dogleg ground-floor stairs lead to an open-well staircase with cast-iron balusters, lit from above. The front right-hand room has a decorated plaster ceiling, modillion cornices, six-panel doors, and panelled shutters. The houses share common features and similar elevations with other listed properties built by Gay in Cotham and Tyndall’s Park.
