Description
38 and 40 Cotham Road are pairs of attached houses built around 1840. They are constructed of stucco with limestone dressings, featuring a central brick stack and a pantile hipped roof. Designed in the Italianate style, the houses are three storeys tall, with a basement and attic, and each has a two-window range.
The buildings are symmetrical, with broad pilasters at the corners and the center of the central block, which has a frieze, cornice, and an attic with a coped parapet. The outer blocks are two-storey and have a one-window range, cornices, and parapets. The doorways on the returns feature scrolled consoles supporting canopies, with doors that have two oval panels and semicircular-arched stair lights with margin panes towards the rear.
The central block includes tripartite ground-floor windows with cornices and wreathed pediment lintels, and the windows have a mix of 6/6-pane sashes flanked by 4/4-pane sashes. The other windows have architraves, with 6/6-pane sashes on the first floor and ground floor sides, 3/3-pane sashes in the attic, and 2/4-pane sashes in the outer blocks.
Inside, there is an entrance hall with a dogleg winder stair against the side wall, featuring stick balusters and a curtail, along with panelled shutters, six-panel doors, cornices, and a range in the basement. This property is part of a row of semi-detached villas that includes Nos 38-48.
