Description

A pair of attached houses, now flats, dating from around 1840. The houses are constructed of limestone ashlar with rendered sides, and have a roof that is not visible. They are built to a double-depth plan and are in the Italianate style. The houses are two storeys high, with a basement and attic, and have a four-window front. The symmetrical facade features projecting wings with ground-floor bays and a wide central recess, with entrances located at the ends of the wings. A moulded plinth is present, along with banded rustication on the ground floor extending to an entablature which runs around the bays. Paired first-floor pilasters rise to a bracketed cornice, topped by an attic storey with a moulded coping. Porches are located at either end, featuring pilasters to an entablature and a semicircular arch over a recessed half-glazed door with stained glass. The ground-floor bays feature tripartite windows with thin mullions to 6/6-pane sashes, alongside flanking 2/2-pane sashes, and are set within a parapet. Tripartite first-floor windows have architraves and console cornices. The basement connects the wings and is below a tented verandah with cast-iron supports and railings, accompanied by French windows. The middle first-floor windows have architraves to 6/6-pane sashes with panels below. Two attic windows break through the cornice in the middle, with 3/3-pane sashes, and evidence of earlier windows is visible externally. The basement windows have cambered heads and 6/6-pane sashes. The interior features an entrance hall and a lateral dogleg staircase with stick balusters, a modillion cornice, and panelled shutters. The houses share a common plan and elevations with numbers 19-33, although with variations in the detail.
