Description

Rainbow Wood Farmhouse is a farmhouse located on Claverton Down Road, dating from around 1700, with mainly 19th-century windows. The building is constructed from limestone coursed rubble and features a 'syncopated' Roman tile roof. It has a long single-depth gabled range with a very short return wing at the south end, which is attached to a barn.

The farmhouse is two storeys high. The garden front has three nine-pane windows over three twelve-pane sashes, all set under segmental heads. Between the first and second bays, there is a porch with a coped gable and a pair of panelled doors. To the right, there are two blocked oculi on the first floor and a small slated lean-to at the far right. The coped gable has an ashlar stack and contains one six-pane light. There are also two additional ridge stacks and one on the coped left gable.

The return front features a small two-light casement in the attic above twelve-pane sashes, and the short wing, which has a concrete tile roof, includes a two-light casement. The courtyard front has a complex arrangement of windows, including four two-light stone-mullioned casements, two of which also have transoms, all with edge beading. The first floor has two nine-pane sashes flanking a clock face, while the ground floor has two large twelve-pane windows and, towards the left, a panelled door under a transom light. The sashes are set under segmental heads, and there is a moulded string at the first floor that runs the full width except for the first bay. The central ridge stack features a small bell-cote. The short return wing has a lean-to glazed addition at a lower level.

The interior of the farmhouse has not been inspected but is noted to have mainly later detailing. The farmhouse is part of a courtyard group.
