Description
The barn and courtyard buildings at Rainbow Wood Farmhouse, along with the attached walls, date from the late 17th century and mid 18th century, with some alterations made in the late 19th century. The barn is constructed from squared limestone rubble and features a double Roman tile roof. It is a long gabled structure that is attached to the left side of the farmhouse, with a coped gable at the saddle stone and an extension.
The exterior consists of two storey buildings. Central full height plank doors are set flush, flanked on the left by two oculi with flush stone surrounds, above a lean-to. To the right of the doors, there are five rows of pigeon openings, above which are three two-light stone-mullioned casements with a transom, featuring members with face beading beneath a weathered string that is cut back on the left. Beyond the main barn, there is a rough arched opening with a plank door. The outer face includes a large lean-to on the left, topped with a pantile roof.
Inside, the barn has eight bays supported by king-post trusses, with floors on either side of a brick threshing floor. The return range includes a small two storey section with a plank door at the top of a steep flight of stone steps, leading to two large conjoined 19th-century gabled units that project into the yard, featuring wide plank openings. The rear of this range has rubble on the ground floor and ashlar above, with tall eight-pane casements. A tall rubble wall, approximately 3 meters high, links the outbuildings to the farmhouse, featuring a lean-to on the internal face at the house end. This is complemented by a pair of large square ashlar gatepiers with bold cappings on a bed-mould, leading to an opening approximately 3.5 meters wide, although there are no gates present.
