Description
These are a pair of cottages located west of Rainbow Wood Farmhouse, dating from the early 18th century and altered in the late 19th century. They are constructed from squared and coursed limestone and feature a double Roman tile roof.
Originally, the structure was likely a single cottage that was extended with a shallow gabled range on the left in the 18th century, and a larger addition in a matching style to the right in the later 19th century.
The cottages are two storeys high and have a window arrangement of 1:2:1. The added bay on the left has paired twelve-pane sash windows on each level, while the original front features two two-light stone ovolo mould mullioned windows with small pane casements at each level, along with a central plank door. The added bay on the right has three-light casements on each level, designed to match the original details. A weathered drip course runs along both floors, except for the first bay, which has gabled ends. The mansard roof has a flat leaded top, with a central ashlar stack and a smaller stack to the left.
The right return of the building has all ovolo mould casements, including two small singles in the attic, above a single flanked by a three-light window, and two singles with a three-light window and a plank door on the ground floor. The left return features a plain gable, while the original east wall has a twelve-pane sash window on the ground floor and a glazed door within a lean-to porch. The rear of the cottages is mostly plain, with a lean-to addition. The interior has not been inspected.
