Description

This is an early 19th-century detached lodge constructed of limestone ashlar, with a slate roof. The building has an octagonal plan with elongated sides and small, single-storey attached wings. It is two storeys high. The front facing The Avenue features two-light casement windows. Above the circular ground floor window is a square blind light, both set within sunk plain surrounds. Each side has a splay casement window at both levels, also with sunk surrounds. The rear elevation has a casement window to the centre, with blind lights on either side, but without sunk surrounds. A hipped porch stands to the right, with a blind light to the front and rear, and a panelled door. A later wing to the left has three casements. The lodge has a small plinth, a mid-level platband, and deep eaves to the roof with lead hips, and a central ashlar stack with capping. The interior has not been inspected. The Round House is a well-crafted, elegant Neo-classical lodge. The Avenue, on which it stands, was formerly a main route into the city, connecting with Bathwick Hill.
