Description

The Dell is a detached house located on Church Lane in Widcombe, dating from the late 18th century with 20th-century additions. The building features painted ashlar on the front, with exposed rubble at the rear, and has pantile roofs. It is a double-depth, symmetrical gabled house with a central valley, set into a slope, and has a rear wall that adjoins the road at the south end, near Prior Park.

The main front, which faces the garden, is two storeys high and has twelve-pane sash windows, with three on the first floor and two on the ground floor, flanking a 20th-century glazed door. The gables are coped and feature two-stage ashlar stacks. To the left, there is a single-storey extension with a low-pitched roof that projects forward and includes a boarded oriel window. To the right, there is a two-storey link that is fully glazed, leading to the gable of the transverse range. The main entrance is now located in the end wall of this range. At the north end, the building has plain gables, and only one storey is exposed towards the road, which includes a central sash window.

The interior was inspected by Bath Council in 1981, revealing little original detail on the first floor. The ground floor features modern oak panelling on the north wall and a 20th-century extension on the west.
