Description

Allen's Cottage is a detached house dated 1799, although it may incorporate earlier fabric, with 20th-century alterations. The house is constructed of painted squared and coursed stone, with a pantile roof. It has a long, narrow main range, potentially extended by a single bay to the rear, and a smaller, gabled range set back at a higher level to the rear. The west end, where the lane is at a lower level, is raised on a high basement wall.

The two-storey front elevation has three windows, all 20th-century wood casements with small closing mullions, and heavy square stone sills. The first floor has two two-light windows and two small single-light windows. The ground floor has three three-light windows, all with horizontal glazing bars. The coped gables feature ashlar stacks, with a third stack situated between bays two and three, possibly indicating the original outer gable. A date stone with raised lettering is located on the lower gable end, alongside two small vertical casements and a glazed door. The rear of the cottage features two-light casements and a central oculus.

The interior of the house has not been inspected. The building is included on the listing for its group value.
