Description

The Abbey Cemetery Lawton Tomb is a Grade II listed structure dedicated to Edwin Lawton, who died in 1863. This tomb features a Gothic Revival headstone made of white marble with mastic inlay. It has a moulded gabled top adorned with stiff-leaf label-stops. The incised ornamentation includes an encircled Greek cross at the gable, above a star flanked by quatrefoils, and trefoil arcading. A bronze inscription panel at the base notes that the 19-year-old's "life was pure and his disposition amiable." The tomb is notable for its unusual technique, reflecting the experimental nature of the High Gothic Revival. It is located in section II.A.19.20 of the cemetery.
