Description

3, Henrietta Villas is a detached house built around 1840, with late 19th-century additions and 20th-century alterations. The house is constructed from painted limestone ashlar and features a shallow pitched hipped roof with shaped brackets at the wide eaves and moulded stacks at the returns. It has a double depth plan with a single-storey right wing.

The exterior is two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-window arrangement. There is a large 20th-century central dormer, an eaves band, and moulded architraves around the plate glass sash windows. The ground floor windows have cornices supported by consoles, while the first floor sills are lower than a moulded string course that dips below each window. A balconette with diagonal trellising spans the three windows. The central enclosed porch features a blocking course over the cornice, a fine guttae string to the frieze, and a four-panel door with an overlight. The right wing has moulded coping to the parapet, a cornice, and two windows similar to those of the main block.

The interior has not been inspected. Historically, the road follows an old footpath connecting Bath and Bathwick. This area was initially intended for a major development called Frances Square, as indicated on plans from 1793 and 1810. After a significant delay, the suburban development proceeded in a typical Late Georgian style, with the villas appearing on Cotterell’s 1851 plan of Bath and noted as "newly erected" in the Bath Guide for 1853. A print from 1844 shows a row of three similar villas, likely including Nos 3-6.
