Description
This is a detached house dating to circa 1840. It is constructed of limestone ashlar with a shallow-pitched hipped slate roof. The roof features shaped brackets to the wide eaves and moulded stacks rising through the eaves. The house has a double-depth plan.
The external appearance is of two storeys and a symmetrical three-window range. The six/six-pane sash windows have moulded architraves. A returned first-floor sill band incorporates consoles to the sills, and there are cornices on consoles to the ground floor. An enclosed porch has a blocking course, cornice, and a fine guttæ string to the frieze, with steps leading to a four-panel door and overlight.
The house’s location lies along the historic footpath connecting Bath and Bathwick, an area initially planned for a large development called Frances Square in the late 18th century. This development was significantly reduced and constructed in a Late Georgian style. The villas are documented on Cotterell’s 1851 plan of Bath and were described as “newly erected” in the Bath Guide for 1853. A print from 1844, reproduced by Pound, depicts a row of three similar villas, likely corresponding to numbers 3–6. The interior of the property has not been inspected.
