Description

A pair of semi-detached houses built around 1840, with alterations made in the late 19th century. The houses are constructed of limestone ashlar with a shallow-pitched slate roof, a central ridge stack, and wide eaves. They have a double-depth plan with a single-storey rear range.

The exterior presents a symmetrical three-window frontage, with blind windows on the party wall. The houses are three storeys high with a semi-basement. They have plate glass sash windows with geometrical patterns to cast iron balconettes, moulded architraves, and a returned sill band to the first floor. There is a cornice to the central first-floor blind window and cornices on consoles and console-bracketed sills to the ground floor windows, along with a plinth. The first-floor sill band follows the contours of the lower first-floor sills to the outer windows. A late 19th-century four-panel door is set within a right return, approached by steps.

The interior has not been inspected. The area was originally intended for a major development, Frances Square, but was instead developed in a Late Georgian style. The villas are depicted on Cotterell’s 1851 plan of Bath, and were recorded as "newly erected" in the Bath Guide for 1853. The road follows the line of an old footpath connecting Bath and Bathwick.
