Description

No. 17 Grove Street is a house built around 1790. It features limestone ashlar, which is painted on the ground floor, and has a double Roman tile mansard roof that is hipped to the left, with a paired dormer at the front and a tall shared moulded stack at the rear. The building originally had a double depth plan, but the rear section is now part of Ivy Cottage. There is a single-storey lean-to wing on the left.

The exterior is three storeys high with a two-window range. It has a coped parapet that returns to the left, a stopped cornice, and a first-floor sill band. The windows are horned plate glass sashes, with those on the first floor having sun-blind boxes. There is a five-flush-panel door to the right of centre, a window to the left, one window at the front of the wing, and two windows on the left return. Each floor has a single window on the return, and there is a projecting stack pipe encased in ashlar.

The interior was inspected in 1995 by Bath Council. It features match boarding up to dado level, and some stone flagging remains in the basement. Several original doors are still present, including an early four-panel door. The second floor has an original 18th-century fireplace with a late 18th-century hob grate, and the ground floor scullery retains its original copper and grate.
