Description
Cornmarket, located at the rear of No. 62 Walcot Street, was built in 1855 by GP Manners. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and features a slate roof with a continuous horizontal vent below the ridge and stone bracketed gutters. The building has a long rectangular plan and stands two storeys high with a front that has twenty-three windows. The first floor is elevated over an open arcade of round arches with keystones, and it includes an impost band. The arcade features paired two-light four-pane semicircular arched casement windows with a continuous sill band, which is interrupted by buttresses between each pair of windows. A slatted louvre runs the full length of the roof ridge. To the left, the market connects to the entrance block of No. 62, which is a lower four-window block of similar design. The interior has not been inspected. The size of the market building and its attached yard highlight Bath's significance as an agricultural centre during this period, and this area of the city has a long history as a market location. Cotterell's 1852 plan of Bath indicates that there was a cattle market located a short distance to the south.
