Description
7 and 8 St John's Road are a pair of detached houses built around 1830 to 1840, with the architect or builder remaining unknown. They feature painted limestone ashlar walls and a slate hipped roof.
The houses are two storeys tall. Number 7, located on the left and adjacent to a garage that is not included in the listing, has a six-panel door positioned beneath a console hood on the right. To the left of the door is a broad display window with 14/14 sashes, also set within a console hood and featuring a long balconette. The first floor has 6/6-pane sash windows, each with a cast iron balconette. There is a continuous eaves band, and the shallow hipped roof has moulded chimneystacks located at the side and center.
Number 8, known as 'The Doll's House', is similar in design but consists of three bays, with a central door flanked by 6/6-pane sashes. The interiors of both houses have not been inspected.
In terms of subsidiary features, number 7 retains low spearhead railings above a stone plinth, while those at number 8 only survive along the northern return. The broad window at number 7 may have originally served as a display window for a shop. This pair of houses dates from the second phase of the development of the Bathwick Estate.
