Description

No. 62 Walcot Street is a house that was remodeled around 1770 to serve as the entrance to the corn market, with alterations made in 1855 by GP Manners. The building is constructed from limestone ashlar, with a rubblestone right return. It features a double-pitched roof, with slate on the front and double Roman tiles on the rear, along with a moulded stack on the right.

The house has a double depth plan and stands three storeys high, with an attic and basement. Its symmetrical front has two windows and is topped with a coped parapet and cornice. The windows are six-over-six pane sash windows, with those on the first floor set in moulded architraves with pediments. The tall three-panel double doors have lozenge panes in the overlights and are framed by a moulded shouldered architrave with a wide pediment on consoles. The lintel above the doors is inscribed with the words "CORN MARKET," and there is a moulded plinth at the base.

The left return of the ashlar features three gables, each with a six-over-six pane sash window at the centre of each floor. It also has a lead rainwater downpipe and a flying gutter that runs from the front parapet to the rear, along with a moulded string course above the first floor. The rear, made of rubblestone, has two three-over-six pane sash windows, a coved cornice, and a moulded string course above the first floor.

The interior has not been inspected, but photographs taken in 1973 by the Bath Preservation Trust show that several plaster cornices and a fire surround in a front room remain, which are consistent with the building's c. 1770 date.
