Description

No. 1A is a shop that has been converted into a restaurant, connecting No. 15 Bladuds Buildings to No. 1 the Paragon. It features a flight of steps that descends in four stages from The Vineyards to Walcot Street. The building dates from the late 18th century, possibly before 1776. It is constructed of limestone ashlar and has a slate mansard roof with a moulded stack on the left side.

The exterior consists of three storeys and a basement, with a one-window range. It has a coped parapet and cornice, along with plate glass sash windows—two on the second floor and one Venetian window on the first floor. The cornice and fascia span an early 19th-century shop front, which was altered in 1893 by Spackman and Son. This shop front features reeded pilasters and steps leading up to a central half-glazed door with segmental and radial glazing bars in the overlight. A dentil cornice extends over the facade, which steps out to accommodate a three-light, three-pane shop window on brackets to the right, and a three-light, three-pane window to the left. The rear of the building is slate-hung.

The interior has not been inspected. A notable feature below the shop window to the right is a semicircular arch with a moulded archivolt and imposts over the flight of steps. There is a wrought iron handrail to the right of the door that curves around and continues down the first flight of steps. At the front of the steps, there are three late 19th-century cast iron ornamented bollards on octagonal bases.
