Description

Ivy Cottage is a house that dates back to around 1790, although some sources suggest it may be from after 1830. It is part of the rear of No. 17 and is linked to a former lean-to service block against the wall of the New Prison. The building is constructed of limestone ashlar with a pantile roof facing the street, while the rear is made of rubble with a slate roof, and the ground floor is painted.

The exterior features an irregular plan with two storeys in the service block and three storeys plus an attic at the rear of No. 17. Each part has a single-window range. The service block includes a central plate glass sash window on the first floor, situated above a 20th-century planked door, which is flanked by a two-light casement window on the left and a small square window on the right. The right corner has a canted section with another planked door. The rear has a single window to the left on each upper floor and a door below, while the right return on Henrietta Place features a single window on each floor. All windows are plain sashes, and there is a double plain sash flat-topped dormer on the rear wall. The roof is mansard.

The interior has not been inspected. Additionally, there is a small two-storey painted ashlar cottage from around 1800 at right angles to No. 17, which has a lean-to pantile roof against the rear wall and features two irregularly spaced windows and a plain door. Ivy Cottage is included for its group interest, as it forms part of a group with Nos 4 to 17, which are consecutive.
