Description

The Rising Sun Public House, on Grove Street, dates from around 1790 and was altered in the 19th century. It is constructed of limestone ashlar, painted to the ground floor, with a double-pitched mansard roof covered with Roman tiles on the upper slopes and slate on the lower. The building is symmetrical, with four windows per floor. It has a coped parapet, cornice, and a ground floor platband that continues with the adjacent property to the left. The windows are mid-19th century, with horizontal glazing bars and two panes per sash, and horns. A semicircular fanlight is above the double doors in the centre, with a two-pane overlight to the door on the far right. A lease for the property dates back to June 1788, and it has operated as the Rising Sun Inn since at least 1854. The interior has not been inspected.
